THE EVER-GROWING POPULARITY OF MANGA COMICS

Manga comics have grown rapidly in popularity in the United States and have spawned numerous television series, movies, and merchandise from plush toys and strategy card games to video games. They are immensely popular with both children and young adults due to their epic stories and surprise endings.

The most popular manga in the United States often depict several characters in a war of good versus evil, and include supernatural elements. In many manga stories, often the main characters are killed off at some point, a plot twist not usually expected in the American culture of comics, books, and movies. A popular manga can result in anime, the animated version of the comic books.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is perhaps the first manga that exploded in popularity in the United States and has since spawned a franchise of anime, video games, and card games. The story is about a shorter-than-average high school student named Yugi Mutou who has been given the pieces of an Egyptian artifact called the Millenium Puzzle, by his grandfather. Once he puts the puzzle together, he is possessed by the spirit of a 3,000 year old Pharoah who has no memory of his own time. With help from Yugi's friends, he and the Pharoah set out on a quest of discovering his identity and memories through card duels on their journey.

Death Note is a hugely popular manga series that centers around characters who come into possession of death notes dropped to earth by shinigami, or death gods. The possessor of the death note can kill anyone he desires to by seeing the face of that person and writing that person's name into the death book. The story centers around Light, a college student who has come into possession of one of these death notes and wants to rid the world of evil through the use of its powers. His quest is not a simple one and with a brilliant detective, L, on his trail, it becomes a complicated and deadly game for all.

With their recognizable style and exaggerated features, manga has become a phenomenon throughout the United States and other parts of the world. The often serialized stories grip the reader from beginning to end, and trying to predict what may happen next is futile. The manga is a unique style of story-telling and will likely continue its hold on the American culture as it forges new frontiers and gains new fans.
